Week of August 26-30 Update

Wednesday is an Early Release Day!
What are we learning?
Reading:  We will continue working on building reading stamina.  Our CAFE strategy is Check for Understanding.  Students will also be learning to describe in depth a character, setting, or event in a story or drama, drawing on specific details in the text (e.g., a character’s thoughts, words, or actions).
Word Work: Students will receive their vocabulary words on Monday.  These ten words are glued into their word work journal.  Students should bring their journal home every night to study their words.  We will have a vocabulary test on Friday, September 6th. We will have a quiz on the four types of sentences on Tuesday, August 27th (Target students will be given an opportunity to complete in the morning).  We will be studying fragments and run-ons.
Writing:  We have been reviewing the essential parts of a paragraph.  We have also been learning how to use the RACE (Restate the question, Answer the question, Cite the source, and Explain) strategy.  We will use the RACE strategy throughout the year.  Now we will begin to focus on writing narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique and descriptive details.
What about homework?  All homework assignments should be written in the agenda daily. Each night students should read 20 minutes and study their vocabulary words.

We did it!

Dear Parents,
Well, we made it through the first two days of school!  I know it's going to be a great year.  Next week we will complete some beginning of the year assessments such as the RI, and some writing prompts for narrative, opinion, and informational.  This will give us some baseline data to help us know how to proceed for the remainder of the year.
The students will also begin stamina reading while I pull students back with me for some one-on-one conferences.  This allows me to really get to know your child and determine what strategy group they will start in for our CAFE Reader's Workshop.
The job applications went home today, so please look over those with your child. Also, if you have not done so already, please complete the Student Information Survey.
I hope you have an amazing weekend.  I look forward to working with you this year!  If you haven't had a chance,  please e-mail me with the preferred e-mail you would like to use for communication.
Thank you!
Mrs. Hall

Week of May 6th Update

Good afternoon parents,
I hope you all have had a great week! I am so proud of how hard the kids worked on the Milestone test this week! They remained focused and I know they all tried their very best.

Next week in…
  • Reading: We will continue reading the book Stone Fox in class.
  • Word Work: We will review grammar concepts that have been discussed this year.
  • Writing: Students will continue to work on building their writing stamina.

Reminders:
  • As the end of the year is approaching, I wanted to offer a group order for Scholastic books! With summer comes extra time that students have, and as a teacher I would love to see students reading frequently! I would encourage you to buy some books that your child would be interested in reading over the summer. Our class code is Q79JX. I will submit the order THIS MONDAY, May 6th, so have your orders in by 8AM on Monday.
  • Students will take the math Milestone tests on Monday and Tuesday. Please make sure your child arrives to school on time and has eaten a healthy breakfast. They are almost finished!
  • Field Day is on Thursday. If you would like to come, we will begin in the gym at 8:45 for our kick off. Please have students wear their class t-shirt, tennis shoes, and sunscreen. They may also bring water bottles that they are responsible for keeping up with on Field Day. I would also have them bring a change of clothes in case they get a little wet!
  • All 25 Book Reviews for our 25 Book Challenge are due on May 14th. Please ask your child for an update on their progress with this challenge. I would love to see all of my students at the celebration!!!
  • Our end of the year party will be on May 17th. There will be more information on this in the coming days. Stay tuned!
  • Please check ParentVue for your child’s progress report grades. If you have questions, please let me or Mrs. Philp know.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. I hope you all have a wonderful weekend!
